12 Days of Christmas Cookies.

December is finally here (and so is my Mom) so that officially means holiday music non-stop on my radio, visits to Santa, decorating every square inch of the house and of course, Christmas Cookies.

I'm so thrilled to share a very special new hand-illustrated Holiday Tea Towel that you use have for the season. So, we're taking the first "12 days of Christmas" to celebrate 12 of our family's favorite classic Christmas cookie recipes.

Each cookie is featured on the tea towel and guess what? My mom is the one who illustrated it so it's all the more special to me. Not coincidentally she's the one that taught me to bake each of these cookies so this has truly been one of the most special, full-circle projects I've gotten the chance to work on to date.

And seeing the season through the eyes of my kiddos is all the more special.

I'd love for you to share some of your favorite decor, traditions + recipes too with hashtag #HEIRLOOMEDHOLIDAY all season.

    The Kids Table.

If you know me, you know that I'm a big believer in sitting down together at the table as a family to enjoy a meal. One of my favorite things about our home is the kids table.

We have a little table that is perfectly sized for our three little kiddos to all sit together and eat. The main breakfast table in our kitchen is perfect for family supper, but it's table + bench style so my littlest guy (how is he almost TWO?) is almost old enough to sit there on a daily basis and eat without us having to worry that he'll fall off the back side. Thus, the kids table lives on.

We have worked to make the kitchen, pantry and kids table super kid-friendly so our little guys can be independent and help right alongside us at meal time. We have little cups stacked in the pantry and a little step stool so they can grab a snack if they're hungry, and keep stacks of dishes accessible for them too to help set the table.

One of my favorite things to collect is vintage enamelware because I love how simple and utilitarian the designs are, and because they are so sturdy and tend to hold up really well over the years. For this reason I also just love using enamelware for everyday dishes for our family. Unlike a heavy porcelain plate or bowl, if one of us happens to drop a dish it's much safer and easier to clean up and we don't end up having to throw away a broken dish.

My friends at Falcon Enamelware, an iconic brand out of England, send over some of their gorgeous pieces for us to enjoy in the pigeon grey color. Now, I haven't met a piece of enamelware I didn't like, but this grey has completely won me over. Above all else, beautiful and functional dishes for your family means you don't have to use a bunch of mismatched plastic "kids wear" dishes or paper plates. Setting a meaningful table for the kids too certainly helps them to understand the importance of mealtime.

My little helpers love to set their table and I know it makes mealtime feel so much more special when we are all gathered around together. Giving them real table linens can also help set a proper tone too, without being to stuffy or formal.

The kids are always charged with saying our mealtime blessing before we eat and I love the simplicity of their prayers. It formally marks the beginning of the meal and they've inspired a really special new collection that I'll be sharing with you soon.

We've also been dining al fresco out on the patio recently with this gorgeous summer weather and that's one place we can all comfortably sit around the table together. It's certainly a different dynamic and a really casual atmosphere, and we usually have the music on the porch speakers.

    Family Movie Night.

In keeping with the family traditions over here, we are not ones who generally do a movie night.

Neither Shane nor I are really huge movie people (I know, I know ...) but there are certainly some classics that I'd love for the kiddos to see and a Friday night is always the perfect time for this fun family tradition.

Where you used to have the process of getting in the car and going to Blockbuster to physically pick out whatever movie was left in-stock, our kids now have every movie ever made literally at their fingertips.

I love popping up some popcorn and letting them pick out a little movie-sized pack of candy for a few snacks and all piling onto the couch together in our PJs for a little fun time together. With our age ranges (5, 3 + 1) sometimes the theatre can be a little challenging but they're just getting to the age now where I think it's about to get really, really good.

I also love the idea of bringing movie night outside for these summer months and figuring out a good projector system to rig up in the front yard, invite the neighbors over and all bring out our blankets. There is just something about seeing a movie outside "drive-in style" that feels so special and classic to me.

Happy weekend to you! Love to know what family traditions you love this time of year! #HEIRLOOMED

    Family Game Night.

Among the toys and tablets that we often get caught up in, we try our very best to take a step back when it comes to showing our kiddos the magic of childhood.

It's the simple traditions and the most spur-of-the-moment experiences that I remember loving most from growing up. Playing in the yard with friends and swimming until the sun went down. Impromptu cookouts after a ball game and a game of checkers at an inn that had no TV or internet access. Riding my bike up to the Sing store for a cherry icee and a roadside bake sale stand. This is what I want for their childhood.

One thing we love to do together as a family, now that our kids are a bit older, is have an old-school family game night. Their favorite right now is Sorry. It's colorful, simple and pretty basic - and gives them the benefit of some pretty great fundamental skills no matter their age. We have color recognition for Waylon (almost 2), counting for Sawyer (3) and downright strategy for Wyatt (5) who has been known to pull a ringer on us from time to time.

A little dose of friendly competition is hard for our kids with the ages they are right now, but certainly a good life lesson. And spending time with them all together, gathered around a table learning, laughing and making memories beats just about any other Friday night activity I can imagine.

Any tradition we can create together is a score in my book. And of course it reminds me of all the games we played growing up, especially with my Grandmother who just loved to play a game of cards with us, like Rummy, and the little tile game of Rummikub too.

And, of course I absolutely love that so many of the games have come out with "vintage" versions that just look so great. But scoring an original vintage find from a flea market or antique store is always the way to go if you happen upon one.

For a young family, I thought it might be fun to share a few of our other simple game night favorites - and would love to know what some of your favorites are as well!

    Moms in the Kitchen.

With Mother's Day fast approaching I thought it would be fun to look back into the archives at some of the photos we've captured over the years of Moms in the kitchen.

It's a funny thing with the development of technology over the years the kinds of photos we take today versus those our grandparents did. The black and white photos of days past were filled with folks properly dressed at all times in every day moments, looking natural and so beautifully romantic. Today, you might be hard pressed to find a photo with Mom anywhere around.

One of my favorite suggestions for Mother's Day (aside from an apron, of course) is gathering your family for a fun photo shoot. Something casual and "everyday" that lets the photographer capture the spirit of your family, personalities and a little slice of your life. I am so thankful for the treasured pictures I am able to have through my business, since I make my kiddos model aprons and recipe test all too often. But it's given me the most beautiful collection to look back on and see how much they've grown in such a short time.

Moms are often in the kitchen a good bit. Fixing snacks, packing lunch boxes and preparing weeknight family dinners in a flash. Any time you're able to take a step back and have a leisurely experience with your family and food is a great opportunity for your children to learn from you, just the way you learned from your own Mother or Grandmother in the kitchen.

Teaching them the fundamentals of a skill, letting them chop for the first time or measure and pour the flour, or letting them take the reins in learning a treasured family recipe provides them both a magical and memorable experience. Mother's Day is a wonderful time to block of the day and just have a fun family baking activity, forgetting the mess of the flour and eggs (because, Dad) and taking in the moment to truly experience food and tradition with your family.

I hope you have enjoyed this little montage of photos. I wish I had so many of me when I was young cooking with my Mom because we did it so often! I'd love to have you share your own "mom and me" photos in the kitchen, cooking with your kids with #HEIRLOOMED and I'll be sure to share them with our community.

Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms out there.
